This has been one of the most painful books I have ever read. I have read everyone of DeMille's books and was initially excited to get into the story of his latest release. I did finish the entire story and was waiting, waiting and waiting for something more because after all this is Nelson DeMille - wished I hadn't. The last fifty pages offered the only excitement in the story. My God, what happens to writers when they grow older? Their mojo apparently vanishes with maturity. I beg you to bring back Up Country, Lion's Game, etc. writing style/storyline. Nelson DeMille's latest novel, "The Cuban Affair," is a departure from his earlier novels, introducing a new character, an ex- military man who shares some of the features of his famous John Corey. There is a similar devil-may-care attitude to this fellow, a fishing-boat captain in the Florida Keys, footloose and carefree, seeking adventure. He finds it in a caper to Cuba, apparently inspired by a recent trip the author made to the island. What follows is an interesting travelogue across the island looking for treasure captured from wealthy families by the Castro regime. There is plenty of salty dialogue as the captain and his benefactors race against the Cuban government troops. There is also an abundance of hide and seek, chasing around the island, and so forth. Unfortunately, the action resembles more a spaghetti western than the exciting Corey novels. But if you believe a few invaders can outwit and outrun the nasty Communists, this may be for you. Especially if you think the way to go into battle against a superior force of trained soldiers is to first take a few shots of rum on an empty stomach,and follow them with a couple of beers and some sex on the beach. Sounds good, but not really advised. Daniel Silva provides more realistic and thoughtful international adventure in his novels.
